The Common Good has been working for several years on this important initiative to support the American Museum of Women’s History in Washington, D.C. It’s a long overdue dream to establish a bipartisan and national American Museum of Women’s History in Washington, DC, dedicated to showing the full scope of the history of women in America. A Congressional Commission has recommended to Congress and the President that a national museum of women’s history be built on the Washington Mall as part of the Smithsonian.

This new museum would tell the stories, celebrate the accomplishments, and illuminate American women’s history in ways that will inspire and inform people of all ages and all walks of life. But it will still take Congressional action to make the museum a reality. Thanks to the leadership of Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney and many other dedicated women, there is hope that the museum will move forward given the Commission’s strong recommendation.

As of November 12, 2019, after nearly two decades of work spearheaded by Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, the H. R. 1980-Smithsonian Women’s History Museum Act to create a new Smithsonian Museum for Women’s History was unanimously passed passed the Committee on House Administration, and is head to the House floor. It is more critical than ever to show your support for this initiative as the House will soon vote.

Here are two action steps you can take immediately:

  1. CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVES – Tell them how important the museum is to you and ask them to vote to support the H. R. 1980-Smithsonian Women’s History Museum Act. Please call or send the letter below your Representative. You can find your representative’s number and address here.

Dear [Congresswoman/man or President Trump]

I strongly support Congress enacting the H. R. 1980-Smithsonian Women’s History Museum Act to create a new Smithsonian Museum for Women’s History on the National Mall.

Women make up more than half of our nation’s population and have played essential roles in every part of our nation’s development. While most Americans know the stories of Rosa Parks, Abigail Adams, and Susan B. Anthony, countless other brilliant leaders, innovators, explorers, gifted artists, scholars and trailblazers are virtually unknown.

A recent report of the independent and bipartisan American Museum of Women’s History Congressional Commission concluded, “America needs and deserves a physical national museum dedicated to showcasing the historical experiences and impact of women in this country.”  The Commission’s report lays out a blueprint for Congress to follow to create this new museum and why this is so important for our country.

A Women’s History Museum would tell the stories, celebrate the accomplishments, and illuminate the history of American women in ways that will inspire and inform people of all ages and all walks of life. And it is long overdue.

As your constituent I urge you to support this pivotal legislation to finally create a Smithsonian museum on the National Mall to honor the women whose contributions have shaped our nation.

Thank you for your consideration and your continued service of our country.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
