Democracy, America’s founding virtue, has faced turmoil in recent years—protests, riots, occupations, violence, and even two attempted assassinations of a former president. Polarization and partisanship still rankle the American political landscape, and the quarreling and posturing continues. Democracies have forever been considered fragile, and there is growing evidence that democracies both here and abroad are backsliding.

America’s Report Card ©, details how the U.S. fares against other nations, our strong suits and weakest hands. Assessing democratic traits can be complex and necessarily selective. To elucidate these trends, this edition of America’s Report Card © on Democracy has aggregated the data that measures the strength of democracy in the U.S. and around the world.
