About Our Speaker

Dr. Richard Haass is a veteran diplomat, scholar, and president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, where he served for 20 years. He is a senior counselor at Centerview Partners and chaired the 2013 Northern Ireland negotiations that led to the Stormont House Agreement.

A former director of policy planning at the State Department and special assistant to President George H.W. Bush, he played key roles in U.S. policy on Afghanistan, the Gulf War, and Northern Ireland. A Rhodes Scholar with degrees from Oxford, he has taught at Harvard and Hamilton College. 
Haass has authored 16 books, including The Bill of Obligations, a New York Times bestseller, and writes the Home & Away newsletter on Substack.
